When to Coach vs Mentor? 🤔
This week I was helping a Tech Leader improve their coaching skills. The dilemma we explored this week was when to coach vs mentor?
It's common for leaders to assume coaching and mentoring are the same. However, once you start to develop coaching skills it quickly becomes apparent that there are some differences.
To help this particular tech leader I drew this model. It describes two factors that can help you decide:
For a given challenge or goal, you can think about two dimensions.
The nature of the challenge: Does it relate to the person's external world (skills, knowledge, things) or their internal world (beliefs, assumptions, mental models)?
Their ability to tackle the challenge: Do they have the skills, knowledge, confidence to tackle their challenge?
Reply to this email to let me know how you decide when to coach or mentor.
