5 Leadership Lessons from England Manager Gareth Southgate

Toby Sinclair

5 Leadership Lessons:

  1. Pressure doesn't lead you to success. It often moves you away from your goals. You must focus on making the environment fun and enjoyable. The team must want to be there.

  2. Amplify the good. There are always things that be improved but don't overlook the positives.

  3. The best teams eat together. Mealtime is one of the most important times for team bonding. Create the time and space for your team to eat together.

  4. Ability is not enough. High Performance is more than just talent. Work ethic, teamwork and efforts off the pitch are critical. The best team players are high performing, low maintenance.

  5. The leader sets the standards. Role model the behaviours you want others to adopt.

People that aren't involved in elite sport from the outside looking and think everyone's like Churchill. You stand on a box and shout at the players and you do it all the time, 24/7. Gareth shows a different kind of management. The importance of quiet leadership.
